Are you interested in human rights issues? Or are you a national member of this organisation who hasn't yet joined up with a local group? Would you like to know more about some of the people and issues raised in the media? Then please read on.
Who are we?
We are Group 104, the nearest group to Havering.
When do we meet?
Our meetings are held at 8 pm on the second Thursday of each month at the Friends' Meeting House, Hutton Road, Shenfield - just a short walk from the station. However as many of the group come from Havering, providing lifts to potential members wouldn't be a problem.
What do we do?
We are a small group, but a very active one. We discuss current human rights issues, such as the topical one of blood diamonds, undertake some action each month, [which is often writing a letter to politicians or to the press, to highlight a campaign on behalf of a person or a country], or learning from one of the many speakers from HQ about how we can do more or how we could improve what we are doing already. Twice a year we hold a street collection, to raise funds and to raise awareness about what we stand for. We take part in the annual 'Greeting Cards' campaign each December.
Why do we do it?
We seek to help those who have been unjustly imprisoned, not because they have committed a criminal offence, but because of the beliefs they hold, because of the faith which they follow, or because of the race or tribe they belong to. Very often these people have no one else who can speak up for them.
