September in the Rain review

This is a well written show by John Godber about Liz (Claire Storey) and Jack (Shaun Hennessy) as a couple from Yorkshire taking their annual holiday in Blackpool, for the umpteenth time. They have been going there such a long time there isn’t anything left to do they haven’t already done and they retell their stories of previous holidays there.

When any of us go on holiday we behave differently, just because it’s a holiday, and yet still do the same things we would do at home. A fried breakfast is still the same, like fish and chips but somehow we want them to be different. Liz and Jack are no different to any other couple but the way they go about their business is still the same as at home, the arguments, the boredom when it rains, the fantasies, the memories……ooh the memories……turn tedium into a very funny show with both characters talking both to each other and the audience in a way we can all associate with. It gives the audience the opportunity to add a lot of extra pictures of their own experiences to bring into the story without taking anything away from either Jack or Liz.

Overall, this is a show worth going to see because the actors make you feel you’re there and I couldn’t tell you any more about it without spoiling it. It’s much like a pantomime without audience participation but don’t try to fill in the gaps yourself, they do that themselves, in their own way. It’s on until 13th September and may well sell out every night, so it’s time to get in that holiday spirit and make your way down to the Queen’s Theatre.
