Frankie & Benny's The Brewery, Romford
We live in an age where chain-owned restaurants and bars are the norm; carbon copies of one another, no character, no soul….
I think Frankie & Benny’s breaks that mould slightly - although I must admit I’ve never been to another one in the UK so could be wrong!
The interior of the venue is rather striking on entry. American ‘diner’ styled seating, wooden frames, red bricks and photo’s of 1950s icons cover the walls (see below). It’s quirky, colourful and rather different.
However, the really appealing addition to the NY-Italian theme is the fantastic soundtrack that accompanies your meal. The sounds of Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Gene Vincent and many more stars of the 50s provide a cracking soundtrack. So popular is the music that F&B sell their own CD’s online!
After being taken to our table, we decide on Bruschetta to start. A classic appetiser of red onion, tomato, garlic and olive oil on ciabatta bread, however this had a hint of pesto on top too - really enjoyable with a glass of Merlot wine.
For my main dish I chose the Chicken Americano pizza after seeing one being freshly made on the open-plan kitchen. The base was thin and slightly crispy, just how I like it, with generous toppings of grilled chicken strips, pepperoni, red onion and chillies. A pizza with bite!

My girlfriend opted for the Penne Arrabbiata - pasta tossed with chilli, garlic and olives in a tomato sauce. A few too many olives (we counted 16!) almost ruined the dish but after taking some out she found the right balance of flavour.
After this carbohydrate fest, we both took some time to enjoy a French Coffee and watch a birthday celebration. Cliff Richard’s ‘Congratulations’ plays loudly whilst the candles are blown, damaging what was otherwise a great night of music!
We decided to share a dessert - a Cinnamon Waffle Crunch - and didn’t regret it. A soft cinnamon waffle topped with vanilla ice cream, crunchy toffee pieces and toffee sauce. A real treat to finish with, and the tastiest dessert I’ve had for years.
Frankie & Benny’s is a one of the better themed restaurants, with friendly staff and great music to compliment, and the food is tasty although unimaginative. Give it a try - you’ll enjoy it.
