Police have power to kick yobs out for 48 hours

From December Havering Police will be implementing section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 in Romford Town Centre.

Police say this is to tackle of alcohol related crime and disorder in Romford Town Centre, and further supports the HCSP's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy launched last week.  It has been agreed by the Havering Senior Management Team that the section of the Act will be enforced within the ring road of Romford Town Centre (shown below in red).

Area where power exists

The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 provides the police with a power to issue a direction to an individual aged 16 years or over who is in a public place to leave a locality.

It will be used when people have started to become drunk and are causing problems but have yet to commit offences. It will prohibit their return to the Town Centre for a specified period of time, not exceeding 48 hrs.  It is thought that in most cases people will be asked to leave the Town Centre and not return until the morning (when they are sober)

A person who refuses to leave or returns within the specified time commits an offence.

The power will be used proportionately, reasonably and with discretion in circumstances where it is considered necessary to prevent the likelihood of alcohol related crime or disorder.
