Moscow Ballet
Coppélia
Russia’s finest dancers come to Hornchurch to perform the enchanting ballet Coppélia at the Queen’s Theatre on Sunday 9 November at 4pm and 7.45pm.
Following their sell-out show last year, the world-class Moscow Ballet La Classique returns to the Queen’s to present two performances of the magical, comical fairytale Coppélia.
The tale revolves around eccentric inventor Doctor Coppélius who has constructed a beautiful life-sized dancing doll. The mechanical mannequin is so entrancing and life-like that when the doctor leaves it on his workshop balcony one day, Franz, a red-blooded village youth, is captivated by its beauty. But Franz’s feisty fiancée Swanilda decides to teach him a lesson to punish him for his behaviour – comical chaos is unleashed and true love eventually wins the day.
Directed by Elik Melikov, the show features principal dancers and renowned soloists Nadejda Ivanova, Ekaterina Shalyapina, Andrey Lyapin and Andrey Shalin, with Alexander Sedov and Roman Shuparsky playing Dr Coppélius.
Founded in 1990, Moscow Ballet La Classique consists of leading dancers from prestigious dance venues of the former Soviet Republics including Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, St Petersburg’s Kirov Theatre and the ballet theatres of Kiev and Odessa in the Ukraine. The troupe has thrilled ballet lovers the world over on hugely successful tours, earning international acclaim.
Coppélia is one of the jewels of classical ballet - a hugely enjoyable dance-spectacular, perfect for ballet lovers of all ages.
