The River Rom is the historic stream that runs through the middle of Romford town centre. Indeed, it was the ford on the Rom that gave our town its name!
The Romans crossed the river en route to London, the Star Inn Brewery used the river to transport its ale and the last flood in town was due to the Rom in 1888.
However residents living in the Town Centre and Brooklands wards will know that the Rom has seen better days. Certain parts have become dumping grounds or hang out areas for youths at night, and most of the bank walls are covered in graffiti 'tags'.
Although we like to put blame on the council, Community Times has learned that it's actually us that have to attend to it!
The Environment Agency have duty to manage the drainage and flow of the water, whilst Havering Council have to look after sections of the river that pass through public land (ie parks). So what about the rest???
Andrew Rosindell, MP for Romford, has proposed a 'River Rom Action Group' to start work in 2008. All residents and volunteers are invited to join, with the following works being the target:
* Full clean up of River Rom water stretch from Collier Row to Roneo Corner, including rubbish and dumped items.
* Wash away all graffiti, broken glass and vandalised items.
* All weeds and overgrown plants/trees to be cut or ripped out.
* Discuss ways to monitor ASB in certain areas.
* Ways to make the river look more pleasing to the eye.
Environment Agency guidelines suggest that any part of a waterway that passes through residential area should be cared for by the residents.

CT Romford and Andrew Rosindell MP are hoping this project can take off ASAP so if you're interested in adding your name to the list please email rivergroup@ctromford.co.uk
Updates and meeting news will be on the CT website as and when it comes in.
