Age Concern: Press The Panic Button |
|
 |
Every year more than a quarter of a million elderly people seek medical treatment in an Accident & Emergency Department as a result of a fall at home. A fifth of these falls result in a fracture. Even those which do not result in a serious injury can put the victim at risk of hypothermia if they can’t get help.
Age Concern Havering, a local charity, is urging older people to take extra care in their homes and to join the Aid Call network.
Aid Call enables an older person to gain instant help in an emergency and therefore to go on living independently in their own home with confidence.
‘At the press of a button the Aid Call alarm operates a two-way speech link to enable the older person to speak to an operator within seconds’ said Stan Gann of Age Concern Havering ‘A friend or neighbour will be contacted immediately or if no one is available the emergency services will be alerted’
Lindsay Kirk from Aid Call said ‘We provide reassurance for over forty thousand people every year. We have a dedicated Emergency Response Centre on hand 365 days a year and we answer an average of 1600 calls over a twenty four hour shift.’
‘One lady in Harold Hill called us every day for a week until she got used to walking again after her joint replacement operation’
Anxious friends or families worrying about an independent older person in Havering can arrange a free demonstration and Aid Call can usually be installed within forty-eight hours.
‘Aid Call would be a brilliant Christmas present to an independent relative’ said Stan ‘Peace of mind would mean a lot more than a pair of socks’
